Coaches play a vital role in mentoring and organizing their teams. They provide instruction and guidance, ensure fair playing time for all players, and most importantly, create a fun and positive environment.
As the primary point of contact between the league and their team, coaches also communicate any scheduling changes or league updates.
While a background in hockey is helpful, it’s not required—what matters most is a commitment to supporting the players and fostering a love for the game.
MBHL Sports Coaches Code of Conduct
As a coach with MBHL I commit to upholding the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and positivity. I understand the influence I have on young athletes and pledge to lead by example through the following principles:
1. Teaching Fairness and Respect
I will instill in my players the importance of fair play and respect—for the rules, officials, opponents, and one another.
2. Equal Treatment
I will provide all players with equal instruction, discipline, support, and fair playing time, regardless of their skill level.
3. Positive Reinforcement
I will refrain from yelling at or ridiculing players for mistakes or poor performance. I understand that encouragement fosters both confidence and enjoyment.
4. Prioritizing Fun
I recognize that players participate in ball hockey to have fun. I will create a supportive environment where players can enjoy the game and believe in themselves.
5. Ensuring Safety
I will ensure that all equipment and facilities are safe and suitable for the age and ability of the players.
6. Setting a Respectable Example
I will lead by example—conducting myself with integrity, offering generous praise, and maintaining a positive demeanor at all times.
7. Continuous Improvement
I will seek opportunities to improve my coaching skills to better serve my players and contribute to the growth of the sport.
8. Cooperation with Officials
I will work respectfully and cooperatively with officials, fostering a collaborative environment that benefits the game and its participants.
9. Commitment to Fair Play Principles
I agree to uphold the principles of the FAIR PLAY CODE as set forth by the Alberta Minor Ball Hockey Association and supported by MBHL. I recognize that fair play enhances both safety and enjoyment for everyone involved.
10. Compliance with MBHL
I agree to follow all rules, regulations, and decisions established by MBHL.
Assistant coaches play a key supporting role on the team. They help the head coach manage the bench, ensure that players are engaged and having fun, and step in to assist wherever needed to create a positive and organized team environment.
Coaches may occasionally call on parents to assist with various tasks or to step in when needed. Volunteering your time—whether it's helping on the bench, organizing snacks, or assisting at practices—is greatly appreciated and plays a big role in keeping the league running smoothly. Your support helps create a fun, inclusive, and well-organized experience for all players.
Teams may require extra support through roles such as team managers or other helpers. The need for these positions will be determined at the discretion of each team’s parent and coaching group. These roles help lighten the load and ensure a more organized and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
